It’s not very often I get approached by a couple wanting to get married in less than three weeks time, but when Stephen and Michelle contacted me, saying they wanted to get married in their own back garden before Michelle’s Father Brian began chemo – I literally couldn’t refuse.
Within a week I’d popped round to their house in Offerton and held the first meeting interview in their back garden, getting all the info I needed about them to start writing their ceremony script. Stephen and Michelle are a colourful couple with a love of Vespa’s, Northern Soul and Ska, pirates and their hilarious (and pretty lively) bunch of family and friends.
They wanted their wedding to be a celebration of all the best bits of their lives, making sure Dad Brian had a healthy dose of positivity before the difficult times began. They also requested that in the spirit of Ska-Punk I wore red dungarees and a stripey pirate shirt, which I ordered especially! I created a ceremony for them that was unique and informal, something that could be conducted from the comfort of their back garden and still feel like a meaningful and momentous occasion.
Jack Sparrow (or Cousin Carl) came in full pirate garb, they included a pagan hand-fasting and jumped over a blinged-up broomstick and read stunning vows that the Bride and Groom wrote themselves.
Dad Brian gave his blessing and laid the hand-fasting cord and readings were included from the likes of punk-poet legend John Cooper Clarke. With a gazebo set up to seat fifty, and the uncharacteristically sunny Manchester skyline it was a day full of laughter, love and good vibes.
This is exactly the reason why I do what I do!!
Stephen and Michelle – it was an absolute pleasure to conduct your humanist wedding ceremony! CONGRATULATIONS ON THE REST OF YOUR LIVES TOGETHER!
